What a tensor is
Tensor is the general term for the one-hand rods used in bioenergetic testing, the BiRek, the Ökotensor, the travelling tensor, the Bio-Tensor and the Rio-Radiometer among them. The BiRek was developed according to Dr F. Kramer and is the version supplied for use with BICOM® systems.
Construction
The BiRek is made up of three parts:
- A metal handle with a socket, so the tensor can be linked by banana plug cable when the test arrangement calls for it
- A swinging rod, which plugs into the handle and is fixed there
- A sensor element, fixed at the top of the swinging rod

Holding and reading the swing
The rod is held level, with all the fingers holding the handle at its end. Right-handed testers hold it in the right hand, left-handed testers in the left. A horizontal swing, to and fro, is read as resonance. A vertical swing, up and down, is read as dissonance.
Test setting
In the standard arrangement the tensor is held between the plate electrode and the person being tested, so the sensor element sits midway between the two fields. The open part of the sensor cup faces the plate electrode at a distance of about 15 cm, with the person seated sideways to the electrode at about 30 cm. On the BICOM® 2000 the modulation mat takes the place of the plate electrode, again at about 30 cm.
Connecting to other accessories
The socket in the handle takes a banana plug cable, so the tensor can be linked to the plate electrode, the brass hand electrode, a point electrode, the Goldfinger electrode, the dental electrode or the magnetic depth probe, depending on the arrangement being used.
Test programs
- A programs: 171 constant amplification, 192 constant amplification with frequency sweep, 198 amplification with frequency sweep
- Ai programs: 170 constant amplification, 191 constant amplification with frequency sweep, 197 amplification with frequency sweep
Working conditions
- Use a disturbance-free test place, as set out in the BICOM® operation manual
- Arms and legs should not be crossed, and the hand holding the tensor should not cross the centre line of the body
- Bracelets, quartz watches, chains and metal rings can affect the strength of the swing and are best removed
- Work with one person at a time. Results are less consistent with a group present
- Testers usually check their own swing first, holding the rod level with the free hand about 10 cm in front of the chest. The swing should be roughly a hand’s width
