An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) is not uncommon in dogs, but it is rarely diagnosed in horses. The cause of hypothyroidism is usually an autoimmune disease (lymphocytic thyroiditis), which is similar to Hashimoto’s thyroiditis in humans and leads to chronic inflammation of the thyroid gland and, in the long run, to hypothyroidism.
The thyroid hormones influence the metabolism of most organs of the body. The reduction in thyroid hormones leads to a reduced metabolic rate. This leads to a reduction in heart rate, a lower body temperature and an impairment of physical performance and mental abilities.
In conventional medicine, in addition to a laboratory test and, if necessary, a stimulation test, an ultrasound examination is sometimes also performed.
Symptoms of hypothyroidism
- Poor coat
- Hair loss, dermatitis, seborrhoea
- Delayed coat change, change in hair colour

The symptoms are diverse and make it difficult to classify them at the beginning of the disease. This is why hypothyroidism, especially in horses, is often detected late or even discovered only by chance. Common dog breeds affected are Golden Retrievers and Dobermans.
Bioenergetic diagnostics

If the antibodies mark gluten in order to break it down, they also stimulate the formation of antibodies against the thyroid gland due to their structural similarity. Therefore, every time gluten is ingested, the immune system also triggers an attack on the thyroid gland. This could also be a mechanism that plays a role in veterinary medicine. However, this has not yet been clearly clarified.
Please also consider stress levels, radiation exposure (see above), the special role of gammaherpes viruses (EBV).
In the diagnosis, possible drug triggers (e.g. amiodarone, acetylsalicylic acid, furosemide, glucocorticoids, etc.) should not be forgotten.
Due to the close connection of the thyroid gland with all other endocrine glands, Hashimoto’s thyroiditis always has an impact on the complete hormone balance.
