In our last newsletter, we covered the topic of metabolism with a focus on fat metabolism. In this newsletter we want to dedicate ourselves to the topic of carbohydrate metabolism and excretion of pancreatic juices. The digestion of carbohydrates already takes place in the mouth by the salivary enzymes, which split long sugar chains into smaller pieces. In the small intestine, these smaller pieces are converted into glucose, pass through the intestinal wall and are transported to the cells.
Carbohydrate metabolism is divided into:
- Storage of glucose in glycogen in the liver (glycogen synthesis)
- Breakdown of glycogen stores (glycogenolysis)
- Breakdown of glucose to pyruvate for energy production (glycolysis; ATP is created)
- Breakdown of glucose to ribose-5-phosphate and NADPH (pentose phosphate pathway)
- Build-up of glucose from pyruvate during food abstinence (gluconeogenesis)
The hormonal regulation of carbohydrate metabolism is important for stable blood sugar levels. It takes place via insulin and glucagon. Insulin is produced in the beta cells of the pancreas. It helps to transport glucose from the blood into the cells and thus lowers blood sugar levels. Glucagon is produced by the alpha cells of the pancreas and acts as an antagonist of insulin. When blood sugar levels are low, it ensures the breakdown of glycogen into glucose in the liver and the release of glucose into the blood.
Disorders in carbohydrate metabolism such as insulin resistance and diabetes as well as hypoglycaemia and hyperglycaemia can be treated with the BICOM bioresonance method as a supportive complement to conventional medicine.

Please also keep in mind that in TCM the pancreas belongs to the element earth and is closely connected to the spleen via the spleen/pancreas meridian.
